Painting is fundamentally about capturing and orchestrating light. While imitating the play of light on an object and its resulting shadow is a basic concern, it’s merely a starting point. I prefer to incorporate the light source within my paintings, illuminating objects on the left from their right side, objects on the right from the left, while objects lower in the picture plane are lit from above.
This method immerses the light source within the painted scene, producing an inner glow helping the viewer to feel surrounded by it. Ultimately, the light being reflected from a finished painting is engineered. This reflected light is not an imitation, it is the actual light viewers experience.
