Composition, Color and Image are the three actions I pursue to create a painting.
Composition is geometry within the playing field, the playing field is the rectangle. Balance and Movement are attained through geometry. Line direction and shape placement move the viewer’s eye through the picture informing it where to look first and where to look last. To establish a focal point geometry is employed. Traditionally there are right, left, right movements and left, right, left movements which draw the eye through the composition. I also employ the down, out and up movement where the viewer looks down at something, out at something, then up at something.
Color is the science found in painting. When mixing paint colors we find that elements like cobalt and iron oxide, which reside in an acrylic polymer solution, are mixed together. This is chemistry, a science. But colors are chameleons because their identities change due to their location next to other colors. The human eye sees a color’s intensity and shade differently when placed in the vicinity of other colors. White is used to judge the value of a tint, black is incorporated to judge the value of shade.
Image is the concept and the story. What you paint is as important as how you paint it. A picture is worth a thousand words and every picture tells a story. The image produces words which are thought by the viewer. Ultimately, the image tells the story of the painter. The choices made as to the medium and materials used to the framing, everything is about the painter and often more revealing.
